The length of K-pop hit songs seems to be shortened from about 3 minutes to 2 minutes and 30 seconds this summer.

According to the music industry on the 16th, “Super Shy” by girl group Newzins, which has emerged as the biggest hit song this summer, is only 2 minutes and 34 seconds long.

“Super Shy” plays a synthesizer sound that creates a mysterious feeling for about 12 seconds, and immediately the key section of the song “I’m super shy, super shy” appears.

The other two titles of Newzines are shorter. “ETA” is 2 minutes and 31 seconds, and “Cool With You” is 2 minutes and 27 seconds, which is less than 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

For this reason, the total running time of the six songs on Newzins’ second mini-album “Get Up” is only 12 minutes and 16 seconds.

In the music industry, the length of the song is getting shorter and shorter.

As major music delivery media shifted from CDs to music sources, hit songs in the 2010s were mainly in the late three-minute range, with Psy’s “Gangnam Style” in 3:42 and Big Bang’s “FANTASTIC BABY” in 3:52.

It is shorter than in the 1990s to put the main part of the song in a minute of free preview of the music. The reason why the team name of girl group 4Minute, which debuted in 2009, meant that it would capture the hearts of fans in four minutes was the result of reflecting this trend.

Then, as short-form content such as TikTok became popular, the length of the hit song decreased to around 2 minutes and 50 seconds, and this summer, the length of the song has been shortened by 30 seconds to 2 minutes and 30 seconds

In addition to Newzins, (G)I-DLE’s “Queen Car,” which swept the top of the chart from May to June, was 2 minutes and 41 seconds. In addition, the length of popular songs this summer will remain in the mid-two-minute range, with Le Seraphim’s new song “Jewelly” standing at 2 minutes 43 seconds and Jeon So-mi’s “Fast Forward” standing at 2 minutes 40 seconds.

It is said that K-pop agencies did not intend to make short songs. It is explained that the song naturally became shorter as I made a sophisticated song that followed “the current music grammar.”

An official from Newzins’ agency, Ardor, said, “We didn’t make it short because we thought of the length of the song and intentionally made it short,” adding, “Considering the flow of the song, a song that is better to be short is short, and if it is long, it is long.”

However, there is definitely an advantage of short song length. Another advantage is that more dense performances can be presented on TV music programs and concerts.

An official from the music industry said, “Music fans these days do not prefer long songs,” adding, “(short songs) are also advantageous for promotion through TikTok.”

Earlier, U.S. hip-hop artists such as Drake and Migos tried a strategy to put a lot of short-length songs into the album to benefit their chart performance, said Kim Do-heon, a pop music critic.

Critic Kim said, “As the length of the song has been shortened, the introduction has definitely decreased compared to before, and the core melody of the song has often appeared right away,” adding, “As you can see in Newzins’ ‘ETA,’ now there is a strong tendency to focus on elements such as beats rather than (time-consuming) melody core melodies.”
